Private Luxor Tour Planning Guide: Tickets, Pace & Transfers

Start with the experience, then choose the stops

A private Luxor tour works best when the route fits your interests and energy. Three carefully chosen visits with time to look can be more rewarding than a long list completed in a hurry. This guide helps you compare proposals, understand ticket inclusions and agree the pace before booking. What “private” does and does not mean

Ask separately whether your guide, road vehicle and boat are exclusive to your party. A private guide does not mean that a monument closes to other visitors, that you skip all queues, or that restricted rooms become accessible. If the programme includes ballooning, establish whether the basket is shared: our standard sunrise balloon option is shared with other passengers.

• Name the party size and the vehicle capacity, including luggage.
• Confirm the guiding language and whether the guide accompanies the whole route.
• Identify any shared activity inside an otherwise private itinerary.
• Ask who will contact you if a guide, vehicle or pickup arrangement changes.

A realistic rhythm for the East Bank

For a first visit, pair Karnak and Luxor Temple with a proper break between them. Start with the larger site when the group is ready to walk and concentrate. Leave time for looking, photography and questions; do not treat a drive past an entrance as a visit.

A useful planning outline is one substantial morning visit, a lunch or accommodation break, and one later visit. This is a suggested rhythm, not a measured schedule. Your guide should confirm the opening hours, walking conditions and transfer plan for the date. If you want detailed time in Karnak’s Open Air Museum, say so before the day is priced.

Build a West Bank day around your interests

The Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s temple and the Colossi of Memnon are a common combination, but tomb selection and the time inside each site determine the quality of the day. If you want Medinet Habu or the Valley of the Queens as well, consider a second day or replacing a stop. A longer list does not create more comfortable visiting time.

Ask the guide to explain which tombs are open, which fit your interests and which require an additional ticket. Entry policies can change, and not every tomb is open at the same time. The Egyptian Tourism Authority describes the general Valley of the Kings ticket as covering three tombs, with additional passes for certain tombs. Confirm the current selection and special entries before paying.

Compare the whole quotation

Use this checklist for any operator, including us. A low headline price may exclude something essential to your plans.

1. Guiding: language, duration, licensed guide, private or shared.
2. Transport: pickup address, return address, vehicle, air conditioning and any river crossing.
3. Tickets: list every included site and any premium tomb or separate museum entry.
4. Meals: restaurant, included food, drinks and dietary arrangements.
5. Extra costs: optional stops, gratuities, additional waiting and payment fees if applicable.
6. Changes: cancellation terms, weather-sensitive activities and the procedure for closed sites.
7. Contact: the person who can resolve a problem on the day.

Request the currency and total for the whole party. Keep an itemised written confirmation rather than relying on a message saying “everything included”. Official ticket portals are the best place to recheck current admission information.

Comfort belongs in the itinerary

Tell the organiser about walking limits, stairs, children, preferred breaks and any need to avoid long exposed visits. Build in water stops, shade where available and a proper midday rest in hotter weather. Air conditioning in the car does not remove the heat at a monument. Ask where toilets and seating are available rather than assuming every stop has the same facilities.

For guests with mobility needs, request specific information about surfaces, steps, vehicle entry and the route inside each chosen site. Confirm requirements individually; “accessible tour” alone is not enough detail.

Transfers are part of the plan

An East Bank pickup and a West Bank pickup can require different routing. Confirm the full door-to-door journey, including waiting at a landing if a boat is involved. For airport arrivals, share the flight number, landing date and luggage count, then agree flight-delay handling and a working contact. Leave airport departure buffers to the confirmed flight and transfer plan, not a generic sightseeing estimate.

If Luxor is a cruise handover, confirm the boat’s actual docking location and access arrangements. The name of the cruise alone does not identify the pickup point.

Longer excursions deserve their own day

Dendera and Abydos suit travellers who want to explore beyond central Luxor. Ask for the expected driving commitment, the chosen stops, meal and comfort breaks, and the return plan. Combine them only if the whole party is comfortable with a full day. A separate day also prevents a late return from compromising a pre-dawn activity or flight.

“We are [party size] travelling on [date], staying at [property and bank]. We would like guiding in [language]. Our main interests are [sites or themes], and we prefer [pace]. Please quote the total for a private guide and air-conditioned vehicle, list admission tickets and special tombs separately, explain meal and drink inclusions, confirm pickup and return arrangements, and state payment and cancellation terms.”
