Two temples, one day north of Luxor
Abydos was ancient Egypt’s holiest burial ground, the home of Osiris. The Temple of Seti I, built around 1290 BC, holds reliefs so finely cut they still look fresh, and the Abydos King List, a wall naming seventy-six pharaohs in order. Look up for the so-called helicopter hieroglyphs, a re-carved royal title that has fuelled theories for decades. Behind the temple, the sunken granite Osireion often stands in groundwater.
Dendera is one of the most complete temples in Egypt, sacred to Hathor, goddess of love, music and joy. Its restored ceilings glow in their original blues. Climb to the roof chapels for the cast of the Dendera zodiac (the original is in the Louvre), and walk to the rear wall to find Cleopatra VII with her son Caesarion. If the crypts are open, look for the reliefs nicknamed the Dendera light.

They are different. Abydos has the finest carved reliefs and the King List; Dendera has the most complete temple, with painted ceilings and rooftop chapels. Seeing both in one day is the point of this trip.
