Choose your bank around your days

Luxor’s West Bank suits travellers who want a quieter base, apartment space and mornings among the tombs and temples of ancient Thebes. The East Bank suits visitors who prioritise central restaurants, large hotels and walking to Luxor Temple. Neither is the right answer for everyone: compare the actual entrance of your accommodation with the places you want to visit.

This planner is published by Egypt Villa Tours, whose owners operate West Bank accommodation. It includes alternatives to our own properties so you can choose according to your needs.

East Bank or West Bank?
Your priorityWest BankEast Bank
Archaeology morningsA convenient base for the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut and Medinet Habu; a vehicle is still needed between sites.Convenient for Karnak and Luxor Temple; allow a crossing for West Bank days.
Evenings on footDining and walkability vary considerably by village and property.Central areas offer a wider concentration of restaurants and corniche activity.
Apartment spaceCompare independent apartments, guesthouses and smaller hotels.Compare apartments with city hotels; check noise and the exact street.
Large hotel servicesCheck each property’s staffing and facilities individually.Consider established full-service hotels if their facilities are central to your stay.
Airport or rail arrivalAgree the full transfer route and arrival contact beforehand.Often simpler for an East Bank arrival, depending on the precise location.

Three West Bank settings to compare

Near the passenger ferry: useful when you want frequent crossings into central Luxor. Ask for the actual walking route, including luggage handling, steps and the return journey after dinner. A river view does not automatically mean easy access to the landing.

Village and riverside accommodation: often chosen for gardens, views and a calmer setting. Confirm road access, nearby dining, evening transport and whether a shuttle has fixed hours. Royal Nile Villas is in Al Aqaletah and provides a free shuttle to the ferry landing daily from 9am to 9pm. Arrange your departure with the team and ask about transport for any return after 9pm.

Near the Theban monuments: useful for travellers focused on tombs and temples, but check how you will reach the river and restaurants. “Near the Valley of the Kings” is not a complete transport plan.

A simple map of the decisions

Schematic: the Theban monuments and West Bank accommodation lie west of the Nile, while Karnak, Luxor Temple and the airport lie east. Passenger boats cross the river; road vehicles use a bridge.
Orientation only, not to scale. Use current directions and your confirmed pickup point for travel.

A short boat crossing is not a door-to-door journey

Build each crossing from five parts: accommodation to landing, waiting and boarding, the river crossing, disembarking, then onward transport or walking. For a car transfer, ask whether you will travel by road via the bridge. The quickest-looking line on a map may not match the route a vehicle can take.

Ask for separate estimates for a normal sightseeing departure, a late return and an airport transfer. Tell the driver your flight time, terminal information if supplied, luggage count and any child-seat needs. Do not use a sightseeing transfer estimate as your airport check-in buffer.

Conditions, exact addresses and the chosen crossing can change the total journey time. The recent-trip estimates below are a starting point for planning.

Recent journey times from Royal Nile Villas

These approximate timings were supplied by co-owner Jeevaka on 10 September 2026, based on recent timed trips by the owners and team, including an airport arrival on 8 September. They are practical planning estimates; allow extra time for waiting, boarding, traffic and your own walking pace.

Routes, transport and approximate travelling times
JourneyApproximate time and arrangements
Royal Nile Villas to the ferry landing15 minutes by our free shuttle bus, available daily from 9am to 9pm. Arrange departure with the team.
Ferry landing to Luxor TempleAbout 5 minutes across the Nile by motorboat, then a 10-minute walk to Luxor Temple. A motorboat typically costs around US$2–3 per boat; confirm the fare before boarding. This is the motorboat estimate, not a quoted public-ferry fare.
Luxor Temple to KarnakA further 5 minutes by car or about 10 minutes by horse carriage, in addition to the journey to Luxor Temple.
Royal Nile Villas to the Valley of the KingsAbout 15 minutes by car. Allow separately for parking, tickets and entry.
Luxor Airport to Royal Nile VillasAbout 20 minutes by car via the airport highway. Airport processing and meeting your driver are additional; agree departure-transfer timing against your flight’s check-in requirements.

The shuttle, motorboat and walk to Luxor Temple add up to about 30 minutes of travelling time before waits and connections. Confirm pickup and return arrangements when planning your day; transport after the free shuttle’s 9pm finish needs a separate arrangement.

Rooming: count beds and bathrooms, not just guests

For families or groups, make one row per apartment. Record the number of adults and children, exact beds, bathrooms, floor, steps, balcony access and whether any beds are in shared living space. Ask about cots, additional beds and accessible routes individually; a ground-floor label alone does not prove step-free access.

Download the blank group rooming checklist (CSV). It contains no guest information. Use initials rather than unnecessary personal details when sharing an initial enquiry.

  • Confirm whether the pool and outdoor spaces are shared.
  • Check kitchen equipment, meal arrangements and dietary requirements.
  • Ask about stair access before selecting an upper-floor penthouse.
  • Agree housekeeping, laundry and late check-in expectations.
  • For children, ask about pool supervision arrangements and balcony safety.

How Royal Nile agency allocations work

Where apartments are available, an agency can choose the units that suit its rooming plan. We agree the exact selection, dates, hold deadline, payment and cancellation terms in writing, then block the agreed allocation. A request is not a confirmed hold. Airbnb and other bookings continue around the allocation.

Our stated group capacity is up to 32 guests across Royal Nile Villas and Royal Home, with up to 12 more at Royal Nile Suites at the Royal Nile Villas location. The overall 44-person figure is subject to dates and suitable bed arrangements; it does not mean that all guests occupy one building or that every room is available.

Compare the apartments or meet Abdol and the owners. For touring, use our private Luxor tour planning guide.

Before you commit

Request a written proposal showing the property and apartment names, bed layout, dates, total price and currency, included meals and transfers, deposit, cancellation terms, hold expiry and your direct contact. For the eclipse period, ask for the specific viewing arrangements and any optional sightseeing costs. Keep room availability and tour availability as separate confirmations.
